1929 Ford Model A 24hp Phaeton

Sensibly upgraded and very well sorted 3.3-litre 24-horse Phaeton; room for all the family; formidable trials potential or very usable Vintage family motoring

This impressive RHD 24-horse Model A Ford arrived in the UK in 1999. It then travelled about a bit, the vendor acquiring it from a gentleman in Holland in 2016 since when it has been given some serious maintenance and development.

Fitted with an extremely sound and solid four-seat Phaeton body, it comes with a good hood and a set of side-screens. By the time of the Model A, Henry had relented about all of his cars being black, but this one is - two-tone black to be precise with gloss black wings and a matt black finish to the main body - it suits the car well.
  UK registered SV 7716, it soon became apparent that it needed a thorough mechanical overhaul. The work was undertaken by Peter Thetford Ltd and Vintage Metal – who between them transformed the car into the reliable and well-prepared example on offer today. There are a host of bills on file from this period, including loads of work to the steering arms, brakes and suspension. New rear wheel bearings were also fitted. Carried out to a very high standard, a great deal of care has been taken setting it all up so that it now starts, stops and drives like the well-prepared car it is. The full-fat 3.3-litre 24hp engine (not to be confused with the weedy 2.2-litre UK offering) has been further upgraded with a down-draft Stromberg carburettor, a high compression ‘Police’ head and a very well made four into one tubular exhaust manifold which all makes for a very torquey engine and a surprisingly sprightly turn of speed. It also has indicators fitted for added safety. The chassis number would indicate a March 1928 build while the engine is dated May 1930, making this a genuine Vintage Ford. It has a current VSCC Buff logbook listing it as ‘Modified’, no doubt due to the special carburettor and exhaust system. Starting instantly and ticking over very sweetly when taking the pictures, this really is a ‘turn key’ car for someone looking for rapid family motoring (a 55mph cruise up hill and down dale) and/or some serious VSCC trialing when the hills finally open again.
