1972 MG Midget MkIII
Totally rebuilt around a
new shell in 2006 and only 6,000 miles since; various upgrades; roll bar;
excellent condition throughout
The last in the line of MG Midgets actually started life
as a re-badged Austin Healey Sprite. A development of the famous "Frogeye", the
Sprite used a unitary body with double wishbone suspension at the front and 1/4
elliptic springs at the rear.
The first cars had rudimentary sliding side screens and
were quite primitive. As time went on, improvements such as winding windows,
semi elliptic rear springs, engine capacity increases from 948cc, through 1098cc
to the 1275cc A-Series engine from the Mini Cooper S were introduced. By the
time the Mk III was launched in 1966 with a proper folding hood, the car had
evolved significantly. This lasted until 1974 when major revisions were
undertaken including the rubber bumpers and the 1500cc engine from the Spitfire
– things were never quite the same after that.
This stunning June 1972 ‘round arch’ chrome bumper Midget
was given a total restoration between 2003 and 2006, the whole process
documented in many invoices and a CD of photos on file. This included a brand
new body shell (which now cost over £10,600), new glass, a replacement interior
and comprehensively overhauled mechanics with numerous sensible upgrades (fast
road suspension bushes; Facet fuel pump; performance carbs; electronic ignition
etc).
Painted in period Glacier White, it was given a set of
Minilite-style wheels, Motolita steering wheel, new chrome and a stainless steel
boot rack, the detailed restoration even going as far as fitting a discreet 12v
socket for a sat nav. A new hood (beautifully installed by a professional
trimmer) has more recently been fitted, the tonneau cover is also virtually new
as is the sturdy roll bar.
Since the restoration was completed it has covered only
6,000 fine weather miles and remains in excellent condition throughout with an
MOT until September 2021 and 12 past MOTs. As good an example as you will find,
this tax-exempt Midget is on offer here at far less than it cost to
restore.
