1988 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Sport
Coupe
Current owner 18 years; Sport model with G50 gearbox;
always well-maintained; recent new clutch kit; just serviced; classic air-cooled
Porsche in super condition throughout
First registered in January 1988, this Carrera 3.2 Sport
has been in the current ownership since October 2002 and has been kept garaged
and lightly used, covering only some 20k miles over the last 18 years, the
odometer currently showing 123,600 miles. Finished in Grand Prix White and
riding on its original white 16" Fuchs alloys, it has factory Sports seats
(option 383/387), sports shock absorbers (option 474), front and rear spoilers
(option 473) and an electric sunroof. It also benefits from the G50 five-speed
gearbox which replaced the rather clunky 915 ‘box from 1987 onwards.
This very car was road tested in the Nov 2000 issue of
‘911 & Porsche World’ when it had done 99,600 miles, the tester declaring it
to be "one of the very nicest I’ve seen for a long time" and in "exemplary
condition throughout". He also refers to a service book with 14 dealer stamps
which has sadly since gone missing. (A member of both the Porsche Club and the
MAC, the vendor took the car up Shelsley Walsh a few years ago and removed the
handbooks from the glovebox prior to his run, handing them to a marshal for
safekeeping. Unfortunately, he forgot to retrieve them before driving home, an
error he only realised many months later).
However, invoices on file show seven services since 2000,
the last in August 2020 at 123,550 miles when a new battery was also fitted, so
it is safe to assume that it has had at least 21 services to date, giving an
average service interval of 5,850 miles.
Other invoices show two new front brake calipers and both
rear calipers rebuilt in 2016 at 122,865 miles; a new clutch kit and various oil
pipes, exhaust gaskets and heater hoses in June 2005 at 119,406 miles; a new
Gemini Cat 1 alarm fitted in 2011 and a new set of Fulda tyres in 2005. There is
also an instruction book for the Blaupunkt Lausanne CD player which was fitted
in 2001, along with an agreed insurance valuation of £40,000 in October 2017.
Presented in generally very good order throughout and said
to drive beautifully, this iconic air-cooled 911 comes with 26 old MOTs back to
1991 and a current MOT valid until August 2021 with no advisories recorded.
MODEL HISTORY
Every schoolboy’s dream of what a proper 911 should look
like, the 3.2 Carrera is perhaps the most popular of the air-cooled models
thanks to its blend of classic good looks, scintillating peformance and
relatively low cost of ownership – all subsequent models being more complex
machines that need deeper pockets to maintain.
Produced from 1984 to 1989 and visually similar to the
outgoing SC, the Carrera was much improved under the skin with bigger brakes and
an 80% new flat-six engine that incorporated an effective cam chain tensioner
and associated lubrication system that at last addressed a perennial 911
shortcoming.
Driving refinement and reliability were improved with a
new Bosch Motronics ignition system, the end result being a power hike to 231bhp
and 209lb/ft of torque. Quick revving and torquey, it shot to 60mph in 5.4
seconds on its way to a 152mph maximum, speeds that only the Turbo model could
have matched in the past.
