1989 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet
Very
smart air-cooled 911 with large history file; 92,300 miles with 24 services to
date; G50 gearbox; electric hood; current owner since 2009
Bought new from Roger Clark Cars of Leicester in April
1989, this 911 Cabriolet has had seven owners to date and was acquired by our
vendor in 2009. It has covered 92,300 miles with no fewer than 23 stamps in the
service book, the last at 89,800 miles in March 2019 plus a large file of
supporting invoices. This gives an average service interval of just 4,000
miles.
During the current ownership it has always been maintained
by Porsche specialists RSR Auto Services of Elmley Lovett, an invoice showing a
further oil service by them immediately before the auction but no stamp in the
book. Other invoices show a new set of Uniroyal Rainsport tyres in 2014 at
82,500 miles; Alpine CD/radio with Bluetooth and iPod connection in 2012;
Tracker fitted in 2000; Thatcham-approved Piranha alarm/immobiliser fitted in
1997. We are told that it had a new clutch 10k miles ago and new carpets last
year.
Finished in classic Guards Red with a Linen leather interior,
it has the desirable Getrag G50 five-speed gearbox which replaced the rather
clunky 915 ‘box from 1987 onwards and Fuchs alloy wheels. The electrically
operated hood is in good condition and works perfectly. The hood cover is also
present as is the spare wheel and the original Porsche tyre inflater.
Supplied with all its original handbooks, it also has 24 old MOTs back
to 1992 (at 18,094 miles) with a current MOT valid until September 2021. Please
note that the private plate shown is being retained and the car will revert to
F591 FVF prior to the sale.
Air-cooled 911s have a devoted fan base, are incredibly
well made and offer a driving experience with no equal. This is a really nice
example all round, with an impeccable service history, and is being offered here
at a very sensible guide price. Quite apart from the pleasure you will get in
driving it, we can think of few better places to park your savings in these
topsy-turvy times…
MODEL HISTORY
Every schoolboy’s dream of what a proper 911 should look
like, the 3.2 Carrera is perhaps the most popular of the air-cooled models
thanks to its blend of classic good looks, scintillating peformance and
relatively low cost of ownership – all subsequent models being more complex
machines that need deeper pockets to maintain.
Produced from 1984 to 1989 and visually similar to the
outgoing SC, the Carrera was much improved under the skin with bigger brakes and
an 80% new flat-six engine that incorporated an effective cam chain tensioner
and associated lubrication system that at last addressed a perennial 911
shortcoming.
Driving refinement and reliability were improved with a
new Bosch Motronics ignition system, the end result being a power hike to 231bhp
and 209lb/ft of torque. Quick revving and torquey, it shot to 60mph in 5.4
seconds on its way to a 152mph maximum, speeds that only the Turbo model could
have matched in the past.
