1932 Riley Nine Drop Head Coupe
A most
attractive DHC Riley; recent Blue Diamond engine overhaul; rear
axle rebuild by Blue Diamond 2018; excellent hood and
upholstery
Thought initally to be an Ascot model, we have been
advised that this car predates that by a short period and it should be termed a
Coupe - presumably a Drop-Head Coupe - we leave you to work that one
out!
A copy from the DVLA of its ownership history would
suggest that it was first registered in June 1932 to a gentleman in London
who was to keep the car until 1995. It subsequently passed through
several hands before being offered by Malcolm Elder at the Motor Shed
in 2011.
Its new owner sent it to Hightone Restorations who did the best
part of £5,000 of work on the doors and window winder mechanisms, the car
entering the vendor's garage in 2017.
Since then it has had plenty
of care and maintenence. Shortly after acquisition, a leaking oil pump was
rectified at Blue Diamond. They then stripped the rear axle and fitted a
new pinion bearing. In May 2018 they gave the car a thorough going
over and fitted four new Excelsior tyres. Then, in 2019 Blue Diamond removed the
engine and dropped the sump for inspection. Repaires were made to
to the oil pipes and everything was refitted with a new starter. The bills
for all of this work approximate £7,500.
The car now runs and drives
nicely and the bodywork is in very presentable condition with
smart upholstery and weather equipment.
The estimate in the
catalogue reflects the current owners lack of storage space - this
smart little Riley offering exceptional value as well as open-top fun
with the option of a draft-free motoring thanks to wind-up windows and a
good hood....as long as you are not sitting in the Dickey seat of
course!
