Including a Collection of Asian Art, assembled over the course of a lifetime, by the late Sam Kenrick…
It was during his time in India and Sri Lanka as a development officer for Christian Aid and later Oxfam that Sam really became interested in the art of the sub-continent. His Asian collection consists of paintings depicting Indian subjects (both by Indian and European artists) and Art from India and Sri Lanka, from the 15th to the 20th century. Bronze vessels, stone and bronze figures of Hindu deities, Bidri metal-ware from the Deccan and Kashmir. Papier mache and enamels, carved and inlaid Anglo-Indian boxes and silver are all represented. A fine selection of Indian miniatures includes a rare signed work by Fath Chand.
A diverse group of British paintings, principally from the 19th-20th century in the auction includes watercolours by William Leighton Leitch, Edward Robert Hughes and John Sergeant.
The jewellery section contains a wide selection of rings, lot 270 being a particularly good example of an Art Deco Sapphire & Diamond Cluster. Two of the wrist watches on offer, lots 169 & 170 are being sold on behalf of St Michael’s Hospice, we hope they make excellent prices for this worthy cause.
The ceramics section includes such diverse lots as a George I delft Tulip charger, a pair of early pearlware lions, two naive Llanelly Cockerel plates, collectable Moorcroft and Royal Lancastrian vases, and a collection of lavish Royal Crown Derby Imari wares and Royal Worcester fruit painted wares. The Asian section includes Japanese woodblock prints, Satsuma, Netsuke and Okimono, as well as Chinese armorial porcelain, Nanking Cargo bowl, a large famille rose vase illustrating an episode from the ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, and a jade double-gourd pendant.
“This interesting sale offers a wonderful eclectic selection of items, and gives prospective buyers the opportunity to view and hopefully purchase a piece of art from some of the far flung corners of the world”. Roger Williams Head of Fine Art
