The Pook Auction of Automobilia and Enamel Signs

‘Signs of success’

One of the finest collections of Enamel Advertising Signs and Automobilia came under the hammer on 23rd July at Leominster based auctioneers Brightwells. The bulk of the 600 lots were from the ‘Pook’ private collection and were offered to the market for the first time in many years.

A large crowd assembled to see what many called ‘the best collection that they had ever seen’ come under the hammer, with enthusiastic bidding in the room, on the phone and over the internet.

Covering every imaginable aspect of early 20th century life, from Automotive to household Soap advertisements, the display offered a fascinating and visually stimulating insight into a bygone era. An early Wincarnis ‘cure-all tonic’ sign offering ‘increased vigour to brain workers’ and a cure for ‘brain-fag’ sold for a commission inclusive £790 while a superbly preserved ‘Punch’ magazine advertising sign made over £2,500.

Top price of the day was achieved by a large British Dominions Service Agent advertisement which made a whisker under £8,000, while a stunning, lightly restored Cadbury Cocoa sign encouraging the public to ‘do your shopping early’ made a commission inclusive £4,000. Other notable results included a very well preserved Great Western Railway sign showing routes to Ireland which sold for just under £1,600 and an ATO double sided race circuit clock which made £2,000.

General Automobilia sold well, a fine Gamages Motor Oil tin making over £500, while a plethora of illuminated garage signs for such long-gone marques such as Jensen, Humber, Hillman and Commer also selling well above expectations.

The marathon sale lasted for over six hours, with spirited bidding continuing to the very last lot of the day, a total of more than £140,000 changing hands. Classic Car and Automobila Consultant Matthew Parkin commented “The results speak for themselves; the market for rare, attractive and often humorous advertising material is clearly as buoyant as ever”.
